LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY
Executive Vice President Chris Walker, represents the CAL SMACNA membership by monitoring legislative and regulatory issues and bills, attending hearings, testifying and writing letters on our behalf. Chris also advises CAL SMACNA’s Legislative Committee, attends board meetings and the annual convention.
DAY AT THE CAPITOL
CAL SMACNA’s Day at the Capitol offers members an opportunity to meet with legislators from districts which include their place of business as well has their residence to represent our industry at the Capitol. This event is normally held as a two day event in January or February.
REGULATORY ADVOCACY
Chris Walker, is responsible for furthering or advancing the understanding and practical application of SMACNA standards; advancing SMACNA standards in local and state adopted regulations; creating opportunities for CAL SMACNA members in the emerging “green” and energy efficiency marketplace; and promoting all technologies necessary to benefit the business goals of CAL SMACNA’s members. STATE AGENCIES MONITORED
CAL SMACNA monitors the following agencies: Department of Industrial Relations, Cal/OSHA, California Energy Commission, California Public Utilities Commission, State Fire Marshal, Industrial Welfare Commission, California EPA, California Building Standards Commission, California State Architect, and Office of State Health Planning and Development.
CONTRACTORS STATE LICENSE BOARD
CAL SMACNA can research licenses with the Contractors State License Board. CAL SMACNA will run your license; check on a contractor you are considering doing business with or bidding against to make sure they have a license in good standing or have the correct classification for bidding the job. If corporate information is needed, CAL SMACNA can access the Secretary of State’s records.
When you need to complete CSLB applications for any reason, if you send them to our office first, we can look them over for completeness and can hand-carry the completed applications to the CSLB office for faster processing.
INDUSTRY MEMBERSHIP AND COMMITTEES
CAL SMACNA belongs to, monitors, and/or serves on the following industry groups: California Building Officials; Construction Industry Force Account Council; the California Chamber of Commerce, Construction Enforcement Coalition, The Construction Caucus and GetREAL.

SAFETY
A sheet metal specific Injury Illness Prevention Program is available at no charge to members upon request. Updates are mailed to participating members as regulations are changed. Also “Safety First” safety hardhat stickers are available to all members.
CAL SMACNA’s Safety Award program recognizes those companies with excellent safety records along with a “Most Improved” award. Applications are mailed in January and awards are presented at the annual convention.
ANNUAL CONVENTION
A flagship activity each year is CAL SMACNA’s annual convention offering three days of fun, informative seminars and camaraderie with your peers from throughout the state. The convention typically begins on the Wednesday of the week after Easter with the Executive Committee/Board of Directors meetings and the kick off Welcome Reception. Thursday begins with an opening business session, workshops, and CAL SMACNA’s Fun Night. Saturday is full with workshops, a closing business session, an awards luncheon and the Installation of Officers Dinner. There is also an annual golf tournament where foursomes play in a shamble format.
ANNUAL AWARDS
CAL SMACNA’s Award program recognizes members for their outstanding contributions. The awards given each year includes: Ed Banks Memorial Award Contractor of the Year, Tom Guilfoy Memorial Craftsmanship of the Year Award, and Distinguished Legislative Service Award. Awards are presented at the annual convention.
